100 Years of International Women’s Day- Henriette’s story
In the current series of blog posts we have been looking at the Women behind Ethnic Supplies products as part of International Women’s Day. yesterday we brought you Flotea’s story and today we take you to Madagascar to meet Madame Rasolariosoa Henriette
Madame Rasolariosoa is a unique and rare African woman
Working from her home in Antananarivo Madagascar, she employs a workforce of 10 men who cut, sew etc to produce amazing baskets and bags.
She was unable to access formal education but was taught how to saw and use materials around her to products amazing handicrafts. She took these skills to set herself up in business and today she exports her lovely baskets to France and the UK through.
The money she earns enables her to put her children through school and pay for health care.
The bags and hats are made out of Raw Wild Silk and Raffia
The levels of poverty in Madagascar mean that begging is a way of life for some Malagasy people. A fellow guest (Gabriel) at the Hotel I stayed in had an interesting encounter with a beggar; she told this female beggar that she could not give something to the whole city or each and every person that asked. The beggar’s response was “I am not everyone, I am me”! I love this thinking! Because I don’t speak French or Malagasy most of what the beggars said escaped me but Gabriel understood it all and it moved her deeply.
Women like Henriette who have found a way to create employment for themselves and others in such circumstances are rare and must be celebrated .
PLEASE CONSIDER SUPPORTING HENRIETTE BY BUYING ONE OF HER BAGS FROM OUR ONLINE SHOP ETHNIC SUPPLIES.CO.UK
